My friend, Mary Ann McCammon and I are both supporters of The Fistula Foundation and its mission to help women who suffer from fistula caused by obstructed labor. This is a huge problem, particularly for very young mothers in countries where healthcare is not readily available. We decided to do a series of quilts that will tell the story of fistula, especially in Africa. Only a Girl is the first in a series of five quilts. It depicts the station of girls in a patriarchal society that educates primarily boys and marries off girls at a very young age.
