“Who’s in There?” was created in response to a High Fiber Diet challenge titled “What’s Blue to You?” At first I struggled because blue is not one of my favorite colors and the strict size requirement is far outside my comfort zone. Then I recalled a photo I clipped from the newspaper years ago. It showed a cluster of Afghani women and girls, the women hidden behind bright turquoise burkas with huge eyes staring out. I had saved the clipping in a file because it haunted me and I wanted to honor the women in a quilt someday. “Who’s in There?” asks us to consider the individual personalities hiding beneath the uniforms they wear. Are they repressed, or are they joyful spirits ready to do a little jig?
